How We Help

Even if you are not subject to multiple flights of subway stairs, knee pain can be crippling for those pounding the pavement as well as for those driving an hour to work. Knees can be easily abused by poor mechanics at the hip, knee, or ankle.

At James Fowler Physical Therapy, our therapists specialize in proper mechanics of the whole leg to ensure that knees are not taking unnecessary stress through improper weight distribution from decreased strength or mobility. We account for every patients’ activities and needs, regardless of if you are dealing with chronic stiffness from a desk job or rehabilitating from a surgery.

Some conditions we treat are listed here on this page, but bear in mind that this list is far from conclusive. If you do not see your specific problem, please feel free to get in touch with us.

Addressing & Treating Knee Pain

There are many causes of knee pain, from the obvious – such as an automotive or sporting injury – to the less obvious – such as patella femoral syndrome, a result of muscular imbalance. For this reason, our treatments always begin with a thorough assessment of your symptoms, range of motion, flexibility, and strength. We want to ensure we properly understand your kneeds (okay, last pun, we swear) and work to address the root cause.

Arthritis

Treating arthritis in the knee with physical therapy has proved to be beneficial and can reduce knee pain. We will assess the weak parts of the knee and surrounding muscle and work to align the joints and mechanics to lower the stress on the arthritic knee.

Bursitis

The main goals in treating bursitis in the knee is to lessen the patients pain level, tightness or stiffness and work to build strength in the weak muscles and tendons surrounding the knee. Our PT’s will evaluate the patient’s biomechanics, injury history and knee bursitis to build a goal oriented plan of care that will strengthen the patient’s knee, reduce pain and prevent further injury.

Dislocation & Instability

Beginning therapy on the knee dislocation or instability starts with reducing pain levels. From there, we work to regain the patients range of motion, strengthen the knee, design a functional training program to replicate daily movements and educate the patient on their body and mechanics to help prevent the injury from recurring.

Ligament Tear

When treating patients with ligament tears in the knee its important to immediately work on regaining the range of motion in the injured knee that has been lost from prolonged inactivity. While regaining range of motion our therapists will implement strengthening exercises, agility and balance all while performing manual therapy with every visit.

Meniscal or Cartilage Tear

Meniscal tears in the knee can often be treated without surgery but depending on the whether the injury is acute or degenerative the treatment will be altered. We treat meniscus tears with manual therapy, icing and heat, strengthening and range of motions exercises.

Muscle Tear or Strain

When treating knee strains or tears it’s important to control the swelling and encourage pain free movement and flexibility allowing the knee to heal. Once the knee pain has lessened we will develop a rehabilitation plan to strengthen the supporting muscles around the knee and educate the patient on proper warm-up and cool down exercises and stretching techniques to prevent future injury.

Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Our therapists work to decrease myofascial pain around the knee by manual therapy and trigger point release. In conjunction with manual therapy hot and cold therapy can help to relax the muscles and reduce pain.

Nerve Entrapment

At James Fowler PT we treat nerve entrapment in the knee through building strength in the surrounding muscle groups along with manual therapy and stretching exercises.

Post-Surgical Reconstruction

Post surgical construction of the knee has many different variations of surgery depending on the injury. Our therapists will follow the surgeons postoperative protocol to rebuild the muscles surrounding the knee and work to increase the range of motion in the knee bending. Our therapist set recovery goals for the patient to work towards at our office and at home with their home exercise program.

Repetitve Strain Injury

Repetitive strain injuries in the knee benefit heavily from rest and hot and cold therapy. It’s important diagnose the repetitive movement that is causing the injury and not only engineer a more efficient way to perform the movement but create a series of strengthening exercises to build the strength in the muscles surrounding the knee to help decrease the strain on the knee.

Sports Technique Rehabilitation

Athletes with knee injuries require a rigorous and customized rehabilitation process. At JFPT we analyze the the patients biomechanics and injury before designing a treatment plan. We factor in the athletes sport and the stresses that are involved with the movements while competing and training. From there we educate the patient on alignment and mechanics to help improve their efficiency and reduce the chance of the injury recurring.
