Located in Manhattan’s Union Square, NYC
How We Help
Being able to move without pain or restriction is important to your overall health and well-being. While injury may prevent unrestricted movement, we work to maximize your mobility so you can enjoy the best possible quality of life.
Our certified movement analysts work closely with our physical therapy team to ensure your therapy is as beneficial as possible. We closely follow the principles of Rudolf Laban and Irmgard Bartenieff to help you move and feel better.
Who We Help
We incorporate movement rehabilitation into most of our treatment programs due to its proven effectiveness. This program is ideally suited for:
- Auto-accident injury recovery, including back, neck, and hip injuries.
- Sporting injuries, including muscle sprains, spinal disc herniations, and other related injuries
- People suffering from arthritis and other forms of chronic pain
- People with a sedentary lifestyle, including office workers, cab drivers, truck drivers, etc.
- Anyone else that wants to improve their range of motion, increase flexibility, and reduce pain.
Our Approach to Movement Rehabilitation
On staff, we have several Certified Movement Analysts who work under the close direction of the physical therapists, using their particular and integrated knowledge of the body in motion. By utilizing the principles of Rudolf Laban and Irmgard Bartenieff, our analysts educate our patients on smooth and fluid sequencing, encouraging a rich scope of their movement possibilities. This particular work is offered to enhance specific change of relationship to core, and patterning of movement.
Who Are Rudolf Laban and Irmgard Bertenieff?
Laban, a Hungarian Architect, “looked upon movement as a two way langugae process through which the body could communicate by giving and receiving messages. He believed that movement stems from the inter-dependence of body, mind and spirit and he understood that our inner life related to the outer world.” James Fowler Physical Therapy used Laban’s theory as a way to look at a patients entire body in order to understand their individual movement patterns. This understanding helps our movement staff find a proper solution to the specific problem.
Bartenieff, a student of Laban in the 1940’s, applied his principles to her polio patients and dancers, but incorporated her own physical reeducation methods and developed what is now referred to as Bartenieff Fundamentals (BF). James Fowler Physical Therapy puts into practice these very fundamentals with almost all of our patients.
